Bridging the North/South divide

Mukbil Ahmed explains how Yemenis in Eccles formed a Welfare Society during the 1970s.

Before, we fight each other! You come from the South, you come form the North, you come from that family. But after that they come more together…That’s the beginning. We eat – we cook the dinner. We cook and we coming eat dinner in my house, not just in their house, all our houses. Then we come all together.

I was chairman. I said to them “I can’t read, why choose me as chairman?” They said “Yes, we like you!” They fought for me. I said “I can’t read or write” but they fought for me.
