Multiple identities

Saida Ahmed ponders her multiple identities.

Mmm. I don’t know…maybe Arabic. Arabic, you know. I don’t feel Madagascan, I don’t feel English. But I feel Arabic. It’s very confusing because my grandma – from my grandfather – she’s pure Madagascan, she’s African. So my mum’s mum, she’s African…her father’s from Yemen. So maybe 75% Arabic… Even when we go to Yemen, maybe, we only feel that we’re going for a holiday, to see family. Mostly we’re feeling this [Britain] is our home, our house. Our home. Because we’ve been living here for a long, long, long time. And my children have been born here, and my daughter’s been brought up here since she was seven. We feel that this is our home, where we feel safe and secure.
